Therapeutic Venesection

The purpose of therapeutic venesection is to reduce the number of blood cells by reducing the blood volume.

Therapeutic Venesection Information

An experienced nurse or doctor performs a venesection during which approximately 450ml of blood is removed from your circulation. The procedure for blood donors is the same. What is the purpose of a venesection? Haematological conditions such as Polycythaemia and Haemachromatosis can be treated by venesection.

On average, each venesection removes 450–500 mL of blood, which is equivalent to 200–250 mg of iron.

Venesection may cause your blood pressure to decline, which may make you feel drowsy or light-headed. Your blood pressure will need to be monitored until it returns to normal.
